A team led by Prof. Dr. Tevfik Karagöz, Head of Pediatric Cardiology at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine and President of the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Association, treated nine patients with congenital heart disease by catheter-based intervention, without opening the chest, in a live broadcast. The procedures, held as part of the National Adult Congenital Heart Disease Symposium, were followed by 150 physicians from Türkiye and from the USA, Germany, France, the UK, Hungary and Azerbaijan.
Karagöz emphasised that patients with congenital heart disease need lifelong follow-up, and explained that catheter-based methods avoid open surgery, reduce the need for transfusion and infection risk, and allow earlier discharge. He also noted that adult congenital heart patients now outnumber pediatric patients.
